What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient and widely revered medical technique that originated in China over 5,000 years ago. It uses the art of precision to carefully and strategically insert fine, sterile needles through the skin at specific pressure points on the body called acupoints.

This method has proven to reduce pain and discomfort resulting from illness or injury. Many patients report that their pain has subsided significantly thanks to acupuncture, so much so that many don’t need to rely on pain medication anymore.

How Acupuncture Really Works

Acupuncture promotes recovery, activates healing in muscle, bone, and joints, improves mobility, and manages symptoms of digestive, reproductive, and immune disorders. All that is achieved through 3 main action mechanisms.
Back needle acupuncture therapy session.
Activating peripheral nerves
The needle’s gentle press on nearby nerves sends special messages to the brain and spinal cord, helping your body feel less pain and start healing. Cells around the needle release chemicals that help your body calm down inflammation and start repairing tissues.
Releasing endorphins
Through stimulation of nerve fibers, the needle insertion sends signals for your body to release endorphins. This adds to the pain relief effect of acupuncture, seeing as endorphins are natural painkillers produced by our bodies.
Modulating brain chemistry
Your brain receives the signal created by the needle and responds by rebalancing your brain chemistry. The technique affects important chemicals that control mood, pain, and body functions like blood pressure and immune reactions.

What to Expect from Your Acupuncture Session

Many people find out that an acupuncture session is not what they expected. Instead of painful sensations you might expect from needles, they find a feeling that’s much stronger – a deep relaxation, comfort, and freedom from pain.

Phase 1

In order to determine the type of acupuncture treatment that will be most beneficial to you, your practitioner will ask about your symptoms and lifestyle. We will inquire about your main complaint, including its nature, history, and what makes it better or worse. Additional questions may concern your sleep, digestion, energy levels, emotional state, and appetite. After assessing your state and condition, we can proceed with the treatment.

Phase 2

The second phase is where the main part of the session is. You will lie on a comfortable treatment table in a quiet room with soothing music playing in the background. We will use ultra-fine, sterile, single-use needles on the selected points. In most cases, people tend to feel a slight pinch during the insertion. Once the needles are in place, you are left to rest peacefully for 15-30 minutes, depending on your condition.

Phase 3

During the final phase of the session, we carefully and painlessly remove the needles. The practitioner will check in with you about how you feel and provide lifestyle and dietary advice, such as stretches and breathing exercises, to support your treatment plan. Your practitioner will also recommend a fitting treatment frequency based on how acute your condition is and whether it is chronic.

I found them to be friendly and understanding. The HBOT is the only one I have done. Only thing is they need 90 min movies lol. I know not everyone will get it.

I decided to go here for pelvic floor therapy as I’m currently pregnant with my first. The pelvic floor therapist I worked with was amazing! She took the time to explain everything thoroughly and I felt so empowered! I believe I had 4 classes starting around 20 weeks learning about kegels. They were able to process all payments through my insurance with ease! I am looking forward to going back for perineal massages! Highly recommend!

I cannot say enough good things about Newmarket Health & Wellness Center Inc. They went above and beyond in caring for my autistic son during his hyperbaric chamber therapy. Tim was incredibly kind and accommodating to his needs, making the experience smooth and stress-free.

I regret that I can’t recall the name of his partner — a lovely woman from India (I believe her name is Anita or Rosita) — but she was also absolutely amazing! Both of them made the whole process so comfortable and positive for my 5-year-old.

We completed half of the treatment and are already planning to return for the second half. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for genuine care and professionalism.

Acupuncture Newmarket FAQ

  • Is acupuncture treatment good for your health?

Yes, the benefits of acupuncture are backed by numerous clinical studies, including those from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Evidence also supports its use for various conditions, including musculoskeletal pain, anxiety, digestive issues, and nausea from cancer treatment.
  • How does acupuncture work?

This healing method stimulates nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, triggering the release of endorphins, relieving pain, supporting better blood flow, and immune response. Needle stimulation helps reduce inflammation and promote overall healing.
  • Do acupuncture needles hurt a lot?

While the procedure looks rather painful, it is almost pain-free for most people. Mostly, you will feel a sensation that is barely noticeable. In fact, a good number of patients find it so relaxing that they fall asleep during sessions.
  • Are there different acupuncture techniques?

Yes, depending on your state and condition, various acupuncture techniques may be a better fit for you. Japanese-style acupuncture is similar to traditional Chinese acupuncture, but it uses even finer needles. Auricular acupuncture focuses on specific points on the ear to reduce stress and pain. Electroacupuncture is also a popular technique variation that uses a low-voltage electrical current to stimulate the acupuncture points.
